The Window That Named Us

This is the window where the name started — my parents' kitchen window. I got it so clean my dad said a bird could fly straight into it and never know the glass was there.

He had a suggestion for what to call the business: Bent Beak Window Cleaning.

Why That Name Never Had a Chance

I love birds. I love wildlife in general. A name built on a joke about hurting one was the opposite of what I wanted to stand for — I wanted to be associated with preserving things, not breaking them.

So I actually looked into how people prevent real bird strikes on glass. The standard fix is a silhouette decal — usually a black hawk or falcon shape stuck to the window, meant to warn birds off before they get close.

The Problem With Black Decals

I stood outside a window one evening and looked at one of these black decals from the bird's actual point of view. And it didn't work. From outside, most rooms read as dark — so a black silhouette just disappears into that darkness. The exact thing meant to stand out blends in completely.

That got me thinking about what colour would actually contrast against the dark of a room as seen from outside. Orange did. Bright, warm, impossible to lose against a dim interior.

Orange Bird Window Cleaning

That's where the first version of this business came from — Orange Bird Window Cleaning, born out of a bird-strike decal problem, not a branding exercise. It made sense to me on every level: the colour was functional, not decorative, and it came from actually caring about the birds I'd accidentally almost hurt.

The Move That Changed the Name

When I moved from Alberta to British Columbia, I found out another company was already operating as Orange Bird Maintenance. Same idea, already taken.

Instead of forcing the literal name, I looked for an actual bird that's naturally orange — one with the colour built in, not applied. The oriole fit immediately: genuinely orange, easy to say, and it carries itself with more presence than "Orange Bird" ever did.

What the Name Actually Means

The colour didn't happen by accident, and neither did the name. Both came from the same idea: don't blend into the background — stand out from it, on purpose.

Look at this industry and you'll find the same handful of names over and over — Gleam, Shine, Sparkle, Clear View. Generic words describing the outcome, indistinguishable from each other. That's the black decal problem all over again: safe, expected, and invisible against everything around it.

Oriole doesn't try to blend into that list. It's a specific, real, orange bird — the same principle that solved a bird-strike decal problem now shapes how we think about the work itself: careful, deliberate, and not interested in looking like everyone else in the category.
